Comeback Effort Falls Short to Mighty Macs in CSACs

Immaculata, PA - Fifth-seeded Marywood University ended its season with a four-set loss to No. 4 Immaculata University Wednesday in the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's volleyball first round. The Pacers fell by scores of 25-11, 25-8, 21-25, 25-23.

Making her first career start, freshman setter Brianna Thompson led the Pacers with 27 assists and seven digs. Meghan Weeks patrolled the net with five total blocks (one solo-four assist).

Playing in the final game of her collegiate career, Amanda Khozouri posted a career-best 23 digs from the libero spot. Mallorie Deschaine posted her ninth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 18 digs. Shayna Finn tallied 14 digs.

Graduate student Stacy Griffing and senior Maddie Lavery, both of whom joined the Pacers for the first time in their fifth academic year following laudable careers in lacrosse and basketball, respectively; completed their own tenure as members of the Marywood women's volleyball squad. Griffing had a block and five digs, and Lavery tallied nine kills and two blocks.

Marywood shot .027 for the game. The Pacers had the advantage at the line with seven blocks to the Mighty Macs' four. Immaculata shot .206 for the contest.

Immaculata came down to earth after generating plus-.400 shooting games for the first and second sets. Marywood turned its fortunes around in the third set with four points to start. The Pacers kept the Macs at arm's length until Mallory Mokay started a three-point run to go ahead 21-17. Two blocks (from Lauren Besecker-Thompson and Besecker-Deschaine) closed out the set.

It looked as if Marywood would turn the tables on the Mighty Macs and send the playoff match to five. Marywood jetted out to a 7-3 on three Deschaine kills. Gabrielle Guerrera took over with a pair of kills for Immac, and they soon took a 13-12 lead. Finn sparked the Pacers with a kill to take a 22-20 lead, and Deschaine gave put Marywood two points away at 23-22. Guerrera again lifted the Mighty Macs with two straight kills. Immac closed the match on a Shelby Belk service ace.

Guerrera shot .310 for the match with 19 kills and just six errors. Belk finished with 16 kills, and Maranda Jones posted 38 assists. Both teams combined for 159 digs.

With Keystone's five-set win over upset-minded Notre Dame Maryland, Immaculata travels to No. 1 Cabrini College in the CSAC semis. The Giants travel to No. 2 Neumann University.
