Marywood, Scranton Set to Host Joe Bochicchio Classic

Scranton, PA - Marywood University and the University of Scranton are set to co-host the fifth and final Joe Bochicchio Memorial Classic this weekend.  Women's soccer action gets underway Saturday at 1:00 pm on both campuses and concludes with games on Sunday at 1:00 pm. Admission at both venues is free of charge.

On Saturday, Marywood will host Alfred University in the first-ever meeting between the two teams at 1:00 pm on Marywood's turf field.  At the same time, the Royals will host Lebanon Valley College at Fitzpatrick Field in downtown Scranton.

Sunday, the opponents will switch, as Marywood hosts LVC at 1:00 and Scranton hosts Alfred.  

This is the fifth and final year of the Memorial Classic, as 2016 scheduling dates do not allow the two host schools to continue with the tournament. 

13761"Planning for this tournament started six years ago when I called Colleen Pivirotto to discuss an idea I had to remember Joe" Marywood head coach Andrew Smith said.  "Joe was a mentor to me in my younger coaching days and to a lot of other coaches in the area, and I wanted a way to remember him and his great legacy not only as a coach but as a person" Smith said.

"Having Scranton co-host with us made the logistics of hosting a tournament a lot easier.  It also allowed us to bring in some very stiff competition" Smith added.  Lebanon Valley College has participated every year, but other nationally and regionally-ranked teams such as Ithaca College, York College (Pa.), Swarthmore College and Richard Stockton College (N.J.) have participated.  

"Unfortunately, with the way the 2016 schedule pans out due to NCAA rules and regulations, we cannot continue hosting the tournament next year.  Even without the tournament, we know Joe's legacy will always live on."
