Pacers Stymie Express for Second-Straight Victory

Scranton, PA – Marywood University won its second consecutive game with a 3-1 victory Saturday over Wells College. The Pacers (3-2) improve their record to above .500 for the first time this season.

Amelia Waibel scored her first goal of the year to put the Pacers on top in the sixth minute. Waibel redirected a shot from Michaela Schmidt on the right side of the cage. Her assist marked Schmidt's first collegiate point.

Gabbie Bower doubled the lead at the 19:53 mark. She unleashed a shot from the right side of the frame that eluded the Express netminder for an unassisted score.

 
Four minutes later, Tori Jo Kakusian delivered a spot-on pass upfield that enabled a breakaway chance for Leanne McManus. McManus capped on the stupendous play with a fierce shot to extend the Pacers' lead to three goals. It was McManus' sixth goal of the year, putting her just 17 shy of the 100 Point Club.

Local youth athletes played mini-game at halftime

Wells (2-3) spoiled the shutout in the 60th minute. After knocking on the Pacers' door repeatedly, Wells received a break on a penalty shot chance. Cat Taylor was successful on the shot to cut the lead to 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining.

Marywood outshot the Express by a 22-4 margin. The Pacers held onto an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Nicole Merrill made one save for her third win of the year. Wells' Sydney Line made 10 saves, and Shelby Bourn recorded the team's first defensive save of the season.

Donned in pink socks, Marywood hosted its Breast Cancer Awareness game. Proceeds from the Manning's Mobile ice cream truck went to fund Play for a Cure. Youth players from the Abington Heights and Lackawanna Trail school districts roused the crowd of 400-plus with a halftime mini-game. 

Marywood travels to Kean Tuesday before embarking on a six-game stretch within the Scranton city limits.
