Potsdam, NY - Lauren Flynn scored just 1:05 into the game to put host Clarkson up early, but Clarkson needed more in the second half to pull out a 4-1 win over visiting Marywood University Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the North Country Classic in Potsdam, NY.  Clarkson improved to 2-0 on the year while the Pacers stand at 0-1-1.

Flynn took a feed from Summer Gillespie's header just a minute into the game and got behind several Marywood defenders to beat Aly Moyer and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.  But the score would remain that way until halftime, despite the hosts out-shooting Marywood 12-1 in the opening frame.  Moyer had five opening half saves to keep the visitors in the game.

A goal just under nine minutes into the second half proved to be the game winner, as Gillespie took a cross from Madison Kather on the right flank and headed it home from close range.  That insurance goal was important, because Julie Youngman would drop a pass to Amanda Allikmaa in the 62nd minute and Allikmaa would beat the keeper high at the far post to make it 2-1.

In exhausting heat and with just over nine minutes to play, Clarkson added another insurance goal when Flynn sent a ball to the back post and found Tori Sailor to make it 3-1.  With just over five to play, Gillespie added her second of the day on a 30-yard direct kick.

Moyer made a game-high eight stops in the loss.  Marywood takes on St. Lawrence tomorrow in Canton at 2:00 pm.
