Marywood Remains Unbeaten in CSAC, Down GMU 56-47

Gwynedd Valley, PA - Marywood University outscored host Gwynedd Mercy University 19-7 in the final quarter and closed the game on a 11-0 run as the visiting Pacers remained unbeaten in CSAC action with a 56-47 road win over the Griffins Wednesday evening in Gwynedd Valley.

Natasha Hessling and Gabrielle Giordano each scored 12 points to lead Marywood (11-6, 8-0 league) in the come-from-behind win. Catie Nealon and Tara Steakin had nine apiece for the Pacers, who were 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the game.

Marywood built an early lead and held a 14-12 edge at the end of the first quarter, but the Griffins (13-4, 7-1 CSAC) responded with a strong second quarter, limiting Marywood to just eight points as the hosts built a 29-22 halftime lead.

Marywood came out strong in the second half, getting back to within three (40-37) by the end of the third quarter. The visitors then took total control of the game and complete their comeback in the fourth and final quarter, holding the Griffins to seven points as the Pacers rallied for the win.

Both teams struggled from the field with Marywood hitting 33.3 percent of their shots (20 of 60) and the Griffins just 31.7 percent (19 of 60). The biggest difference came from behind the arc as Marywood hit seven threes but limited the Griffins to just four of 22 attempts from long range.

Trailing 47-45 with just under five minutes to play, Marywood got a trey from Giordano to take their first lead since the end of the first quarter. Both teams would not find the basket again for the next three minutes until Giordano sank another long-range shot to put Marywood up 51-47.

Steakin got in on the long range action to give Marywood its third consecutive three and put the Pacers up 54-47 with less than a minute to play, and Giordano sealed the win on the charity strip with a pair of freebies.

Marywood will look to remain atop the CSAC standings when it hosts Centenary College Saturday at 1:00 pm.
