Volleyball Thwarts Griffins, Patriots in GMU Sweep

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Marywood University women's volleyball team notched a pair of victories to extend its winning streak to four matches with a sweep of Gwynedd Mercy University and University of Valley Forge Saturday. The Pacers improved their record to 7-14 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Facing host Gwynedd Mercy, the Pacers produced a Colonial States Athletic Conference win by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. In the second match against Valley Forge, Marywood triumphed by scores of 25-14, 25-13, 25-13.

Mallorie Deschaine led the Pacers with 15 kills and 10 digs. She committed only three errors for a .364 hitting percentage. Peri Sheerin totaled eight kills with just one error.

Danielle DeIulio racked 27 assists and nine digs. Shayna Finn led the defensive game with 11 digs.

The Pacers' totaled a .235 attack percentage for the game. The Griffins (7-8, 3-2 CSAC) finished with a .040 hitting percentage.

The Griffin's Casey Griffith had 10 kills and nine digs. Kerry McGlinn provided the team with 23 assists.

In the first set, Marywood trailed 11-9 before a six-point run on Jordan Vossler serves to take a 15-11 lead.

The Griffins rushed to an early 5-1 lead in the second set. The Pacers trailed 14-12 before taking over the lead again on Vossler serves. Marywood took a 15-14 advantage on a Vossler ace and never trailed the rest of the way.

The third set broke the trend with the Pacers jumping out to a 9-4 lead on six straight Finn service points. Gwynedd Mercy won seven straight points, taking a 13-10 advantage on a Liz Schule ace. Trailing 18-16, Marywood put itself in the driver's seat once again on Finn's service game. Marywood tallied six straight, taking a 19-18 lead on a Deschaine and Katherine McGrath block.

The Pacers shot above .300 in two of the three sets against the Patriots.

DeIulio tabbed 32 assists to improve her standing among the conference leaders.

Gabby Santos led the attack with nine kills – her lone error on 16 attempts gave her a .500 attack percentage. Santos also gave the Pacers three blocks.

Three players had double digit defensive games. Finn totaled 13 digs. Vossler provided 12 digs, and Deschaine totaled 11.

Marywood finished with a .235 attack percentage, in contrast to the Patriots' minus-.033 figure.

Gwynedd Mercy defeated Valley Forge in four sets in the other contest at the tri-match.

Marywood hosts Cabrini University Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
