Madison, N.J. – A late rally from Marywood University fell short as the Pacers opened the 2016-17 men's basketball season with a 78-71 loss to perennial NCAA Division III tournament participant New York University (NYU) Friday evening in the opening round of the Rose City Classic, hosted by Drew University.  James Curley led five Pacers in double figures with 20 points.

Marywood (0-1) will take on Hunter College (0-1) in Saturday's consolation game.  Host Drew beat Hunter 76-56 in the opening game at Baldwin Gymnasium.  The Rangers will meet NYU at 6:00 pm in the Classic's title game.

Curley's team-high 20 came on 8 of 12 shooting from the floor as the junior was 3 of 6 from behind the arc.  NYU's Joe Timmes registered a game-high 25 points and was 7 of 10 behind the arc.

Tom DeFilippo and Tip Swartz both added 13 points for Marywood while Jeremy Ringland (12) and Dexter Shy (11) also reached double figures.  Ross Udine (20) and Ted Georgiadis (11) reached double digits for the Violets.

Marywood shot 50% from the field for the night but was held to 37.5% shooting from behind the arc (6 of 16).  Conversely, NYU hit just 37.7% from the floor but knocked down 44.8% (13 of 29) of their threes.

After the Pacers had an early 11-10 lead, NYU took over.  The Violets used a 10-0 run over nearly four minutes to take a lead they would not relinquish.  Marywood went into the locker room down 12, 36-24.

Marywood brought it to three (51-48) with 9:21 to go on a traditional three-point play from Ringland, but the Violets outscored the Pacers 11-4 over the next three minutes of play thanks to three trey's and a pair of free throws to extend their lead back to double figures (62-52).

Three straight layups made for a quick 6-0 run for NYU as the Violets extended their lead to 16, their largest of the game, with 3:23 to play.

Marywood would get its next eight points from DeFilippo who hit a pair of threes around a layup, but Marywood was forced to foul at the other end of the court each time and NYU made good on their charity stripe attempts to seal the victory.

Game time between Marywood and Hunter Saturday is set for 2:00 pm at Drew University.
