Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Host Gwynedd Mercy improved to 2-0 after the Griffins pulled away late to defeat Marywood University (0-3) 78-64 in the Conference opener for both schools.  Marywood was led by Dexter Shy who scored a team high 16 points.  Rip Engel led the Griffins with a game high 22.

Marywood held a 17-16 lead midway through the first half, but after the game was tied for the fifth time at 23-23 the hosts went on a 9-2 run to get a little breathing room.  The Pacers got to within five twice more during the opening half but were down by as many as 13 with 1:32 to play before a quick 6-0 run got the Pacers to within seven (41-34) at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, the Griffins extened their lead back to double digits on a three before a traditional three-point play from Connor Shroyer brought the visitors to within five (46-41).  But another run from GMercyU, this time 13-4, put the Pacers away for good.

Each team had three players in double digits.  Tip Swartz (11 points) and Shroyer (10) joined Shy in double figures. GMercyU had a slight 44-36 advantage in rebounds.

Marywood returns to action after Thanksgiving when the Pacers take part in the annual Cross County Challenge, this year to be hosted by Wilkes University.  Marywood will take on the host Colonels Saturday at 3:00 pm before facing King's College Sunday at 1:00 pm.  Both contests will be played at Wilkes' Marts Center.
