No. 3 Royals Too Much For Marywood in Crosstown Showdown

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University fell to No. 3 University of Scranton 77-45 Wednesday in a cross-city women's basketball contest. Proceeds from the game went to benefit The Team Tommy Foundation that supports Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research in loving memory of Tommy Voytek. 

Gab Giordano led the Pacers with 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Natasha Hessling was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Hessling also provided five steals. 

The Royals (8-0) received 24 points and nine rebounds from Alexix Roman. Sarah Payonk had a game-high 12 rebounds. Mackenzie Yori added nine points. 

Both teams struggled with turnovers. Scranton committed 16 to the Pacers' 15. The Royals shot 46.9 percent from the field, while the Pacers struggled to the tune of 25.5 percent. 

Hessling scored the first five points for the Pacers to give them an early 5-2 lead. Scranton went onn 18-6 run over seven minutes to close the first quarter with a 20-11 lead.

The closest the Pacers came in the second quarter was when Lisa Steakin hit a 3-pointer to cap a six-point run that trimmed the Royals' lead to 27-17 with 7:15 remaining in the half. The Royals responded with a nine-point run. 

Marywood will take on another Landmark Conference opponent Saturday when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna University.
