Marywood, Scranton To Team Up For ALS Awareness

Women's Basketball - 12/6/2016 6:15:00 PM

Scranton, Pa. - The Marywood University Women's Basketball team will be hosting the 'Team Up for ALS Awareness' game when it takes on cross-town rival University of Scranton on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Insalaco Arena. This game will be in support of the Team Tommy Foundation based in Dunmore, Pa.

The Team Tommy Foundation was created to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research in loving memory of Tommy Voytek. A native of Dunmore, Voytek sadly lost his battle to ALS in December 2014. He graduated from Dunmore High School in 1994 with head coach Tara Macciocco. He was also a 1999 graduate of The University of Scranton with a bachelor's degree in business management.

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a progressive, neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages two-to-five years from the time of diagnosis.

"This is another opportunity for our group to continue to raise awareness in the fight to find a cure for this horrible disease," foundation director Anthony Naro said. "Since the inception of our group, we have been able to raise close to $20,000 that has been donated to Robert Packard Center for ALS research. In addition, we have also been able to donate funds to local community events and members in order to assist in the betterment of our community and their lives. All of this would not be possible without the continued support from our annual event and the opportunity to participate in events such as your ALS Awareness game."

There will be raffle baskets, a 50/50, and t-shirts for sale. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the Team Tommy Foundation. To preorder a tshirt, contact Tara Macciocco at tmacciocco@gmail.com or visit the Team Tommy Voytek Facebook page
