Gerchman Dominates Glass to Lift Pacers to Victory

Hackettstown, NJ – Alexa Gerchman posted the third-most rebounds in school history in a double-double outing to lead Marywood University to a 74-58 win over Centenary College in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball. Gerchman posted 16 rebounds and 15 points, in addition to four blocks to lead the Pacers.

Marywood (15-7, 12-1 CSAC) remains in first place, tied with Gwynedd Mercy University, with three games left to play. The Griffins defeated Cabrini College 56-53 in a key CSAC matchup.

Gerchman led three Pacers in double figures. Lisa Steakin scored 13 points, and Catie Nealon provided 10 points. Gabrielle Giordano and Tara Steakin each chimed in with nine apiece.

Centenary's Mallory George matched Gerchman on the box score with 16 rebounds and 15 points. Ally Fugnitti provided 14 points on four 3-pointers, and Kelsey Barofski added 10 points.

Marywood scored 18 of the game's first 20 points to leap out to a 16-point lead in the first seven minutes of the contest. The Cyclones went scoreless for a 6:30 lapse during the Pacers' 16-point run. Natasha Hessling had six points as the Pacers led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter.

After Nealon grew the lead to 16 again with a 3-pointer, Centenary went on an 11-1 run over the next 2:30. A Lisa Steakin 3-pointer started a seven-point run that put distance between the Pacers and Cyclones. Tara Steakin connected on a 3-pointer via her sister Lisa to go into halftime with a 43-32 lead.

Centenary came within two possessions of the Pacers just once in the second half. Fugnitti hit a 3-pointer to trail 54-48 with 66 seconds left in the third quarter. Giordano responded with a layup at the other end.

That started a 10-point run that sealed the victory for Marywood. Alyssa Olson capped the scoring with a jumper with 4:08 left to go on top 68-52. Marywood kept the Cyclones scoreless for an eight-minute time frame from the end of the third period to the fourth.

Marywood hosts Keystone College Saturday at 1:00 pm. The game is the team's Pink Game to benefit the Nadine Cenci Marchegiani Foundation.
