Women's Basketball Secures Record 14th CSAC Win, First Round Bye

Scranton, PA – The Marywood University women's basketball team established a new school record for conference wins with a 79-43 topping of Summit University of Pennsylvania Wednesday. The Pacers won their 14th Colonial States Athletic Conference game of the season, surpassing a mark previously set by the 2009-10 and 2010-11 teams.

Gabrielle Giordano led the Pacers with 16 points, all of two scored in the first half. Catie Nealon provided 13 points. Both Nealon and Giordano each made five field goals from the floor.

The win, coupled with an 18-point Gwynedd Mercy University victory over Centenary College, sets up a Saturday regular season finale with the Griffins to determine home court advantage in the CSAC playoffs. Both Marywood and Gwynedd Mercy secured first round byes with their wins Wednesday.

Despite outrebounding the Defenders by a 39-28 margin, Marywood spread the love around off the glass. Rory Jordan and Breanna Latourette had a team-high five rebounds. Both Alexa Gerchman and Kylie Devlin each swiped four steals.

Courtney Murray made two blocks to move herself in the record books. Murray tied Geralyn Meehan '02 with her 95th block of her career – the second most in program history, just six shy of the record. She also moved ahead of Amanda Lass (2006-07) and Kate Paschak (2002-03) for the third most single-season rejections with her 38th of the season.

Callie Kitowski led the Defenders in points and rebounds with 17 and six, respectively. Jacklyn Simpson had nine points.

Summit committed 29 turnovers to the Pacers' 13 giveaways. Marywood had 18 steals. The forest-green-and-gold shot 43.3 percent from the field, and the Defenders made a respectable 42.1 percent of their shots. Marywood's bench outscored Summit by a 48-2 margin.

The Pacers scored the first eight points out of the gate with three-pointers from Giordano and Tara Steakin. Summit kept the Pacers on their toes for the first quarter. Summit brought the contest to within five with 2:45 left on a four-point run highlighted by a Kitkowski jump shot. The Pacers' responded with a 3-poiter from Devlin in the corner. The Defenders' Carissa Erdman hit a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the frame trailing by six (20-14).  

Three straight 3-pointers from the Steakin sisters and Giordano left the Defenders' imaginations dry in the second quarter. Marywood closed out the half on a seven-point run stamped by a Megan Salter 3-pointer with 25 seconds left.

The Pacers out-produced the Defenders 18-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Griffins-Pacers matchup begins at 1:00 pm Saturday in the Insalaco Arena. Marywood downed the Griffins 56-47 on the road on Jan. 27.
