Marywood Qualifies for ECAC Tourney, Hosts No. 5 Del Val Wednesday

Danbury, CT – Marywood University looks to keep its historic women's basketball season alive with a berth to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Region championships, conference officials announced Monday. On the verge of tying a school record for most single-season victories, the Pacers qualified for their fifth ECAC tournament in the past six years. 

Fourth-seeded Marywood will host No. 5 Delaware Valley University Wednesday night at 7:00 pm in the Insalaco Arena. The Pacers played the Aggies for two consecutive seasons in 2012-13 and 2013-14, falling by six points in both occasions. This season, DelVal (13-13) rebounded from a 3-9 start to finish 13-12 in the regular season. The Aggies earned a berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom semifinals and went to overtime before losing on the road to a FDU-Florham team that eventually won its fourth consecutive conference championship.

Washington & Jefferson College as the top seed in the 2016 ECAC Division III Women's South Basketball Championship. The Presidents finished the regular season with an overall record of 22-5. 
This year's tournament features a field of eight teams, with the first round scheduled for Wednesday, semifinal round Saturday and final round slated for Sunday.

The first round will see Washington & Jefferson host No. 8 Penn State Behrend (15-11). In the other section of the bracket, the Colonial States Athletic Conference's Neumann University, a sixth seed with a 17-11 mark, travels to No. 3 Stevenson University (14-10). No. 2 McDaniel College (21-6) will face No. 7 Waynesburg University (14-13).

Marywood (18-8) won 15 of its past 17 games since the beginning of the 2016 calendar year. The Pacers were the top seed in the CSAC tournament before falling to fourth-seeded Neumann in the semifinals. Marywood is led by CSAC Rookie of the Year freshman Gabrielle Giordano and her 13.1 points per game. Senior guard Alexa Gerchman leads the Pacers in a number of categories, including rebounds (5.8 rpg) and steals (49). 

The first-round winners will advance to the semifinal round. All semifinal games as well as the championship game will be held on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
