Marywood Earns First 2016 Victory at Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Marywood University picked up its first victory of the 2016 season with a 16-3 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University Tuesday in the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse opener. The Pacers scored the first seven goals of the game in the first 12 minutes.

Both Natalie Burke and Ashley Valway heralded the Pacers with six points. Burke finished with four goals and two assists, coupled with four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Valway tallied five goals and an assist. It marks career-best scoring efforts for both Burke and Valway. Burke's six points ties her three goals, three assists versus Centenary last season.

Sam Bussinelli garnered a hat trick with three goals. Caitlin Watson finished with three points on two goals and an assist.

Bussinelli had a team-high five ground balls. Kylie Winton finished with a team-high four draw controls.

Lauren Smith picked up the victory with four saves.

Gwynedd Mercy's Bria Gillard stopped 12 shots in a losing effort. Arianna Hensinger provided five ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Marywood wasted no time in carving its first tally in the win column. Watson scored off a free-position shot within the first 90 seconds. The Pacers piled on three goals in a span of 78 seconds seconds. Burke, Bussinelli and Valway each found the net to provide the Pacers with a comfortable four-goal lead in the first six minutes.

The Pacers' defense held the Griffins scoreless until the 17:38 mark of the first half. After the Pacers let up a Brianna Greer goal to make it 8-2, they held the Griffins to 37 straight minutes without a goal. Marywood started the running clock less than two minutes into the second half on Valway's 15th goal of the year.

Amanda Khozouri added her first points of the year with two assists. Tiffany Brzenk scored her first goal of the season.
