Scranton, PA - A two-run single from Alan Nieto gave Marywood their second and third runs of the ninth inning but the Pacers' rally fell short as they were edged by Gwynedd Mercy University 7-5 to open their CSAC slate.  The Griffins improved to 7-5 (1-0 CSAC) while Marywood fell to 3-6 (0-1).

Trailing 7-2 to start the ninth, Marywood opened the inning with two walks and picked up two more after a infield popup to make it 7-3.  Nieto then singled down the left field line to bring home Zach Andress and Vince Rebar to make it 7-5, but the Pacers' rally would end there after a flyout to center to end the game.

Marywood opened the scoring in the first when Rebar scored unearned on a Matt Staback groundout to short, but the Griffins responded with a two-run second to reclaim the lead.  Marywood knotted the game up in the fourth on a RBI SAC fly from Michael Schlichtig, but the Griffins answered with three in the fifth and one more in the sixth to secure the league win.

Nick DeCandia (0-1) took the loss for Marywood after allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits over 2.2 innings of work. Starter Justin Perez allowed one earned run on two hits in three innings, and Gregory Patuto (2.1 IP) and Casey Reed (1 IP) also saw action on the mound.

Tommy Smith was 2-for-4 for the Pacers in the loss as both teams registered seven hits.

Marywood will travel to Gwynedd Valley tomorrow as the Pacers and Griffins close their three-game regular season series with a doubleheader at Gwynedd Mercy. Game one begins at 12:00 noon.
