Marywood Tops King's for Second-Straight Victory

Scranton, PA – After dropping its first six games of the season, Marywood University posted its second consecutive win with an 11-8 victory over King's College Wednesday in non-conference men's lacrosse. It also marks the Pacers' second straight win over the Monarchs.

Stephen Deiner led the Pacers with three goals and an assist for a career-best four points. Matt Casto supplied two goals and two assists.

Scott Slater scored a pair to move within six goals of the 100 Goal Club. Jake Drexl provided a goal and two assists. Rob Maini, Austin Maylor and Cody Bachman each put two points on the box score with a goal and an assist apiece.

Joe O'Connell yielded an outstanding defensive performance with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Robbie Pickeral also caused three turnovers.

King's was led by Shawn Dickey's three goals and an assist off the bench. Evan Lawshe and Ryan Matusiewicz each contributed seven ground balls.

Normally a low-scoring affair between the two Northeastern Pennsylvania programs, Marywood changed the script when Deiner netted two in the first 3:03 of the contest. Slater and Casto each found find a way past the Monarchs' keeper to hold onto a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

Marywood dominated the second quarter by outscoring the Monarchs three goals to nil. Drexl's lone goal of the game five minutes into the second half provided the Pacers (2-6) with its largest lead (8-2) of the game.

Trailing 11-5 after the third quarter, King's made things interesting in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals. After Matusiewicz slimed the Pacers' lead to four with 8:37 left, Marywood kept the Monarchs off the scoreboard until Dickey's third goal with 61 seconds remaining.

Marywood outshot King's by a 33-27 margin. The Monarchs won the ground ball game 31-30 and owned faceoffs by a 13-22 rate. King's did not commit a penalty.

The Pacers is idle until March 30 when it travels to Keystone College for the first time in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener.
