Aston, PA – Host Neumann University picked up a pair of close wins over Marywood University Saturday afternoon in a CSAC baseball twinbill.  The Knights won game one 3-2 in extra innings and rallied for a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

Marywood (10-21, 1-14 CSAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener on a double steal attempt. While Zach Andress was caught stealing second, David Ortiz scored to give the Pacers a 1-0 lead.

Neumann (19-14, 11-4 CSAC) responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to go up 2-1, but Marywood battled back in the top of the seventh and forced extra innings when Andress singled to left to score Alan Nieto

After being unable to find the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights kept the Pacers off the board in the top of the eighth before winning on a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame.

James Goetz (1-5) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 7.1 innings pitched.  Goetz struck out four and also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double.

Nieto finished the game 2-for-3 as did Andress, who also added an RBI.  Tommy Smith (1-for-2) had a double as well.

In the nightcap, Marywood went up 1-0 in the first on a RBI double to right from Matt Staback that scored Daniel Hull, who had opened the game with a single to right and stole second.

In the second, the Pacers doubled their lead after Nieto walked to open the frame, moved to third on a double from Michael Schlichtig and crossed the plate on a RBI groundout from Mitch Clemons.

The Knights got on the board and cut the Pacers' lead in half in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to center but stranded two runners to end the inning.
Vince Rebar gave Marywood a 3-1 lead in the third with a one-out homer to center field, his team best fourth long ball of the year. Schlichtig then brought around two more runs for Marywood with a single to center, scoring Nieto and Smith to make it 5-1.

Neumann responded and cut the Marywood lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third with a back-to-back RBI doubles and triples. Another RBI single later in the inning cut Marywood's lead to one (5-4).

The Knights tied the game up then went up 7-5 on a pair of RBI singles in the fourth and one in the sixth to account for the final score.

Schlichtig, Nieto and Hull all had two hits in the nightcap with Hull, Matt Staback, and Schlichtig picking up doubles.

Marywood returns to the diamond next Friday when they host Cairn in a 3:00 single CSAC game, the final home game of the 2016 season for the Pacers.  Marywood and the Highlanders will then close the regular season with a doubleheader in Langhorne.
