Field Hockey Narrowly Drops Opener in Late Minutes

Wilkes-Barre Twp., Pa. – Marywood University came short on a late goal to begin its field hockey campaign with a 2-1 loss to King's College Thursday at McCarthy Stadium.
 
King's Brianna DiMaggio put in a shot at the front of the cage via a Sarah Zbierski pass in the 65th minute to score the eventual game-winning goal. It broke a 1-1 stalemate that stood for 33 minutes.
 
Marywood took a brief lead in the 28th minute. Off of a penalty corner, Tori Jo Kakusian blasted a shot from the left side to just inside the left post. Gabbie Bower notched the assist for the push-in.
 
It marked Kakusian's 27th career goal to put her in sole possession of fourth in program history. Bower's 15th assist pushed her into third all-time.
 
Freshman keeper Kerri Mountz made her debut in the case with 11 saves. She pushed aside four straight second-half shots on goal before yielding the game winner.
 
Devan Pepe evened the score at one apiece in the 32nd minute. Pepe directed a shot off of a rebound into the cage for the Monarchs.
 
King's outshot the Pacers by a 16-3 margin. Similarly, the Monarchs held a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners.
 
Paige Tedik made one save for the victors.
 
Marywood has two days to collect itself before hosting Elmira College Saturday night at 5:00 pm.
