Russo’s Big Night Lifts Griffins Past Marywood

Scranton, Pa. – Melissa Russo scored four second half goals as visiting Gwynedd Mercy University rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat Marywood University 5-2 in CSAC field hockey action Wednesday evening.

Marywood (6-3, 1-1 CSAC) , who was looking to snap an eight game skid against the Griffins that dates back 2008, led at the break after first half tallies from Tori Jo Kakusian and Lindsey Quinn.

Marywood went up 1-0 in the 11th minute when Kakusian scored off a penalty corner sent in by Gabbie Bower. 

The Griffins (5-4, 1-1 CSAC) would tie the game at 1-1 five minutes later when Brianna O'Connell scored off a Maggie Walsh penalty corner. 
The Pacers retook the lead in the 23rd minute of action when Quinn lifted a ball over a diving goalkeeper after a scrum in front of the Griffin goal.

Russo would then score four unanswered goals for the visitors.  In the 52nd minute, she scored on a rebound off her own shot to tie the game at 2-2.

Six minutes later, Russo put the Griffins up for good off a feed from Shannon Carroll.  She would add another goal off a rebounded save in the 66th minute and close her spectacular day with a penalty corner goal sent in by Carroll less than a minute later.

Marywood is back in action Saturday when they travel to Immaculata University to take on the Mighty Macs in CSAC action at 1:00 pm.
