Pacers Stymie Cairn for Fifth Straight Victory

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University started strong in a 72-41 victory over Cairn University Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pacers led by 17 before the Highlanders made their first field goal of the night.

Natasha Hessling tallied her second double-double of the year. Her 13 rebounds sets a career high and are the most for Pacer this season. She shot 6 of 12 from the field.

Catie Nealon led the team with 17 points. She hit five 3-pointers and added seven rebounds.

Both Gab Giordano and Alyssa Olson provided 12 points. Giordano continued to help her teammates with five assists.

Marywood coasted out to a 19-2 lead in the first quarter before allowing a Cairn basket. The Highlanders registered their first field goal with 1:42 remaining in the stanza when Aigner Bookard made a jumper. Nealon followed by making a 3-pointer for her eighth point of the quarter, and the Pacers enjoyed a comfortable 23-4 lead.

Trailing 37-15 at the half, Cairn rejuvenated itself in the third quarter. The Highlanders felt Marywood scoreless for the first four minutes. Through the first seven minutes, Cairn outscored Marywood 13-2 to trim its deficit in half to 11. Victoria Sum made it 41-30 with 2:28 left in the third. A Nealon 3-pointer and a Hessling layup curbed the Highlanders' momentum.

Marywood went on a 12-0 run in the third and fourth quarters. Like the first quarter, it held Cairn to one basket in the fourth. Marywood outscored Cairn 72-41 in the final 10 minutes.

The Pacers shot 44.4 percent from the field, and the Highlanders improved their percentage to 26.9 for the game. Cairn struggled to make the best of their trips to the free throw line, shooting a measly 46.2 percent.

Marywood outrebounded Cairn by a 45-38 margin.

Kendra Stum generated 11 rebounds for the Highlanders. Madelyn Brodish had a team-best nine points.

Marywood will travel to Cabrini University Saturday, Jan. 21 in a battle between the first- and second-place teams in the conference.
