Women's Basketball Holds Off First-Place Cabrini

Radnor, Pa. – Marywood University moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball standings with a 63-61 victory over Cabrini University Saturday. The Pacers held off a late comeback to hand the Cavaliers their first conference loss of the year.

Gab Giordano led the Pacers with a season-best 29 points. Giordano made nine field goals and nine free throws to post the Pacers' highest scoring mark of the season.
Alyssa Olson added 15 points. Catie Nealon supplied eight points, and Natasha Hessling tallied eight rebounds.

Cabrini's Nomi Washington missed a jump shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

Washington led the Cavaliers with 14 points and eight assists. Erin Dodds made up for a shaky shooting night with six free throws for 12 points. Myonie Williams totaled 11 points, and Renee Oliver brought down 11 boards.

Marywood's defense held Cabrini to 34.8 percent shooting from the field. The Pacers made 45.8 percent of their shots for the game. The Pacers excelled from the charity stripe with a 77.3 percent clip.

Both teams finished with 37 rebounds.

Cabrini had a 9-7 early lead with Myonie Williams. Olson tied the game up with a jumper with 94 seconds remaining. Giordano followed that with a 3-pointer on the next possession.

Giordano gave Marywood a four-point lead (27-23) with a basket with 43 seconds left before halftime.

Marywood went on a 10-point in the third quarter to take a 41-28 lead advantage with 3:27 left. Cabrini began to come back, cutting the deficit to two on a Kate Skalski shot with 14 seconds remaining in the third.

The Pacers were held without a field goal for the final 2:24. Giordano made a free throw with 28 seconds remaining to up the lead to 63-58. Dodds knocked down a long-range shot to bring it to a two-point game. 
 
Marywood looks to get full possession of first place when it hosts Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday.
