Pacers Fine Tune Defense in Music City Win over Owls

Gallatin, Tenn. -  The Marywood University women's basketball team returned from its holiday break with a 60-42 win over Keene State (N.H.) at the Music City Classic on Friday night in Tennessee. Marywood limited the Owls to a meager 22 points over the final three quarters.

Gab Giordano notched her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Three of her six field goals came from beyond the arc.

Erika Bistran and Natasha Hessling each had 10 points. Bistran recorded eight rebounds.

Marywood made 41.4 percent shot of its shots and held the owls to just 28.3 percent shooting for the evening. The Pacers outrebounded the Owls by a 47-30 margin despite their leading rebounder being held to just a pair off the glass.

Kenzie Bennett had 15 points for Keene State.

The Pacers faced a huge deficit in the early going. After Marywood led 11-6 with 5:18 left in the first quarter, Keene State went on a 13-point run over the next five minutes. Nicole Boucher gave the Owls a 19-11 lead with 48 seconds left on a layup in the paint. Cait Reilly added a bucket to end the drought, but Boucher hit a free throw at quarter's close for a 20-13 lead.

Marywood used a 10-point swing in the beginning of the second quarter to take the lead. Giordano kicked it off with a jumper at 8:32 to cut a deficit down to seven points. She followed that up with a 3-pointer, and stole a pass that led to a Bistran layup to tie the game at 23 apiece. Marywood snagged the lead on a Reilly 3-pointer. Giordano closed the half with a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 34-27 and finish the last nine minutes of the quarter on an 18-4 advantage.

The Owls came within six of the Pacers in the third quarter before Marywood went on a nine-point run.

Marywood takes on Wheaton College (Ill.) in Gallatin, Tenn. on Saturday at 8:00 pm (EST).
