Men's Basketball Closes 2017 with Win over Mount Saint Mary

Scranton, Pa. - The Marywood University men's basketball team wrapped up the calendar year with a 72-65 victory over Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers head into 2018 with a 6-3 record. It is the first time the Pacers ended December with a winning record since the 2014-15 campaign.

Jack DeGroot came off the bench to score a career high 20 points. DeGroot made eight baskets in 21 minutes on the court.

James Curley posted a season-best 17 points. He has reached double figures in each of the past three games.

Thomas Swartz had six assists. Jeremy Ringland blocked five shots. Donovan Catchings scored eight points and made five assists.

Marywood shot 44.2 percent from the field, narrowly beating the Knights' 41.3 percent mark. The Pacers outrebounded Mount Saint Mary 38-30 and outscored the Knights' bench by a 30-14 spread.

After trailing by 17 points with nine minutes remaining, the Knights brought the deficit down to four points when Connor Bacci made an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:13 left to make it a 59-55 game. It capped a 17-4 run. Marywood finished off the Knights by making 13 of 14 free throw attempts in the final three minutes.

Connor McDine made a 3-point basket with 70 seconds left to slice the Pacers' lead back down to four points at 65-61. After Ringland made one of two free throws, Kendall Farrell intercepted a pass that forced the Knights to foul the rest of the way. Curley made a pair of free throws to extend the lead to seven.

Mount Saint Mary fought back with two points on its next two possessions, but Curley and Farrell did not blink at the charity stripe to ensure the Pacers' win.

Daniel Wolff had a game-high 22 points for the Knights. Bacci had 10 points, and Tyler McDine finished with eight points and seven assists.

Marywood hosts Clarks Summit University on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
