Radnor, Pa. – Marywood University held Cabrini College to its lowest margin of victory in a Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game in five seasons. The Pacers fell to the Cavaliers 12-10 in the team's conference opener Saturday on the road.

The Pacers scored three straight goals in the final 8:28 but were unable to overcome the five-goal deficit.

Sam Bussinelli scored three goals and two assists in a five-point performance. Gwyneth Gleason anchored the offense with three goals and an assist. Ashley Valway contributed two goals.

Defensively, Natalie Burke supplied four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Both Haley Risi and Michaela DiLorenzo caused three turnovers. Kelly Ciabattone tallied a team-high five ground balls, all in the first half.

Lauren Smith was outstanding in goal with 14 saves and 10 ground balls. It is the third most ground balls in a single game in Marywood history.

Cabrini went ahead early by taking a 3-1 lead in the first 10 minutes, thanks to a pair of woman-up goals. Avery Murphy gave the Cavaliers an advantage less than four minutes into the game. Bussinelli evened the score at 23:10 but, a mere 30 seconds later, Jackie Neary reclaimed the lead on a free-position goal. Murphy added her second woman-up goal at 21:14 for the 3-1 lead.

The Pacers and Cavaliers traded goals three times the rest of the way, and Cabrini went into the intermission with a 6-4 lead.

Cabrini held off the Pacers and took its largest lead when Liz Hoeffner tallied back-to-back goals within a five-minute span. Hoeffner's second gave Cabrini a 12-7 lead with 11:59 remaining.

Like last year's regular season matchup, Marywood found its spark in the final 10 minutes. Bussinelli scored on a free-position shot with 8:28 left. After Ashley Valway was given a yellow card at the 6:52, Marywood scored two woman-down goals to bring the deficit to two. Gina Babcock found the net with 6:08, and Gleason added her third of the game with 5:20 to go.

Cabrini had four goals and an assist from Avery Murphy. Liz Hoeffner matched Bussinelli with five points. The Cavaliers have won 41 straight CSAC games, dating back to the Pacers' 16-5 drubbing of Cabrini in 2012.

Draw controls proved consequential with the Cavaliers winning 19 of 24 draws. Marywood outhustled the Cavaliers, 33-27, in ground balls. Despite the two-goal differential, Cabrini outshot Marywood by a 37-17 margin.

Marywood travels to The University of Scranton on Wednesday.
