Scranton, Pa. – The University of Scranton pulled away from a one-goal game by scoring eight of the next 10 in a 14-7 win over Marywood University Thursday in women's lacrosse. It was the Royals' smallest margin of victory in three meetings between the teams.

Lauren Smith made 14 saves to become just the second Marywood goalkeeper to notch 500 career saves. The senior netminder currently has 514 saves for her career.

Ashley Valway led the Pacers with two goals and an assist. Both Sam Bussinelli and Gwyneth Gleason chipped in with two goals apiece. Katrina Kelly supplied a goal and an assist.

Defensively, Marywood (3-4) received four ground balls from Molly Yelencsics.

Scranton had four goals and an assist from Meghan Kerr. Morgan Windisch matched her with four goals. Christine Olert provided two goals and an assist.

The Royals (5-1) received seven ground balls from Becca Russo.

Marywood kept the game in reach for the first half. After Windisch used an FPS shot for the Royals' first tally, Bussinelli evened the score on a pass from Kelly with 23:51 left in the half. Kerr regained the lead with a goal from Katie Rogers 67 seconds later. Olert tallied one of Scranton's three woman-up goals via Kailyn Angelo for a 3-1 advantage.

Bussinelli kept her early hot stick going with a goal at 19:18 to trim the deficit to 3-2. Two goals from Windisch and Kerr – both from Olert – seemed to set the Royals in stride with a 5-2 lead with 14:41 to go in the half.

Marywood swung the momentum slightly in its favor. Eighteen seconds later, Erin Healy fed Valway a pass for her 20th goal of the year. Kelly came through on a Valway assist to make it a one-goal game (5-4) with 9:47 left in the half.

Scranton kept Marywood scoreless the rest of the half with two goals of its own to grow its lead to 8-5 at the break.

The Royals outscored Marywood 7-3 in the second half.

Scranton had a 38-20 advantage in shots and narrowly edged the Pacers 22-19 in ground balls. The Royals were proficient with 15 of 23 draw controls. Marywood showed success with 13 of 17 successful clear attempts, and the Royals were 15 of 20 on their transitions.

Marywood was only successful on one of its five free-position shots.

The Pacers look to end their two-game losing streak and notch their first Colonial States Athletic Conference win of the year when they host Neumann University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
