Langhorne, Pa. – Cairn University used several big innings, including a seven-run sixth highlighted by a grand slam, to take the 2017 CSAC opener of both schools by a score of 16-6 over Marywood. The Pacers slipped to 3-7 on the year while Cairn improved to 8-3 with the win.

Cairn scored in each of the first six innings, and plated three runs in both the third and fifth before doing more damage with a seven-run sixth inning.
With the bases loaded and facing a relief pitcher, Nathan Wilson blasted his first homer of the year over the left field fence to clear the bases and give the hosts a 16-5 lead.

Salvatore Monello suffered the loss on the mound and falls to 0-2 on the year. Monello allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while striking out two in 4.1 innings of work.  Billy McAuliffe, Brian Bittlingmeyer and Nathan Michener all pitched as well for Marywood.

Vince Rebar and Bill Chonka each had two hits to lead Marywood while David Ortiz had two RBI.  Brendan Murphy doubled home Jeff Hupfer, who had also doubled, in the ninth for Marywood's final run.

Kameron Bradshaw (3-0) got the win for the Highlanders, who were led offensively by Wilson's 3-for-6, six RBI afternoon.  Jacob Allen added a triple and four RBI for the hosts as part of his 4-for-6 day at the plate.

The two teams will return to the diamond Saturday in Cairn for the closing doubleheader of the three-game series, with Marywood serving as home team despite being on the road. Field conditions in Scranton forced the twinbill to be played at Cairn. Game one is set for a 1:30 pm start.
