Langhorne, Pa. – James Goetz and Justin Haddix both had strong pitching performances and Goetz had a career day at the plate as Marywood University swept Cairn University by scores of 2-1 and 3-1 Saturday afternoon outside Philadelphia.  The wins move Marywood to 5-7 (2-1 CSAC) and avenge the Pacers loss to the Highlanders Friday to give Marywood the season series.

Cairn fell to 8-5 (1-2 CSAC) with the losses.  Marywood played as the home team in both games since the doubleheader could not be played in Scranton due to unplayable field conditions.

In the opener, James Goetz played a major role in the Pacers' win as the senior pitched a complete-game and was responsible for bringing home both of Marywood's runs.

Trevor Powers doubled down the right field line in the third and Goetz's single to left brought him home to put Marywood up 1-0.  The Pacers missed a golden opportunity to add insurance runs after leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth.

That proved costly, as Cairn tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh when Emilio Alvarez singled through the right side to bring home a run for the Highlanders.

Goetz came back strong though, and after Matt Higgins was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and was moved over to third on a Powers' groundout to short, Goetz's hit would prove too much for the Cairn third baseman, forcing an error and brining Higgins home for the winning run.

Goetz was 2-for-4 in the opener while Vince Rebar was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Goetz went all seven innings for Marywood on the mound, improving to 3-0 on the year after allowing seven hits while striking out three. Goetz also lowered his ERA to 1.29.

Goetz continued his heroics at the plate in game two, where he doubled home Kevin McDonough and Higgins in the bottom of the fourth to give Marywood a 2-0 lead. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Goetz would come home when Alan Nieto grounded out to second, making it a 3-0 ballgame.

Goetz finished game two 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Higgins was also 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

Despite giving one back in the bottom of the fourth, Haddix stayed calm and was on cruise control for much of the game.  Haddix scattered seven Cairn hits while striking out four on the day to get his second win of the year (2-1) while dropping his ERA to 1.64 in three starts.

Marywood is slated to return to action on March 28 versus Penn College in Scranton, but field conditions may force another postponement for the Pacers. Please check the schedule page for updates.
