Wilkes-Barre Twp., Pa. – Marywood University was unable to escape an early hole in a 9-6 loss to King's College Wednesday in nonconference men's lacrosse. The Monarchs scored six out of seven goals over a 35-minute stretch.

Matt Casto carried the attack with two goals and two assists for four points. He has scored at least a goal and an assist in nine out of 10 games this season.

Zach Beja tallied a goal and an assist. Luke Shedler supplied a pair of assists.

Ryan Matthews scooped six ground balls on defense. Riley Litman matched him with six ground balls after winning 13 out of 16 (81.2 percent) of faceoff chances.

Vinny Biancardi took the loss with nine saves.

King's goalkeeper Matt Basile was difficult to get by with 17 saves. Brock Johnson scored four goals and an assist.

Marywood (4-6) held a lead for a mere seven seconds when Casto found the net 27 seconds into the contest. Johnson evened the score right away on a feed from Nick Foley. King's took the lead at 10:32 in the first when Ryan Matusiewicz connected on a Jack Camp pass. Johnson added a man-up goal to go into the end of the first with a 3-1 lead.

The Pacers were held without a goal for more than 22 minutes when Matt Mitarotonda netted the first second period goal from Luke Shedler to narrow the Monarchs' lead to 3-2. Johnson menaced the Pacers again with a pair of unassisted goals to close the first half.

King's and Marywood traded goals for the entirety of the second half as the Pacers were unable to gain any traction on their Luzerne County rivals. Zach Beja scored a man-up goal from Casto with 2:26 left; however, Marywood was unable to get within two.

Despite the score, Marywood edged King's 35-34 in shots. King's had a small 27-25 advantage in ground balls. The Pacers failed just one clear, and King's went 15 of 20 on transitions.

Marywood hopes to move to 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference against rival Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday at noon.
