Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University's season-opening, two-game winning streak game came to a halt Sunday with a 9-5 loss to Arcadia University in women's lacrosse. The Knights outscored the Pacers by a 4-1 margin in the second half.

In a game that was postponed from Saturday due to wind chills in the single digits, Marywood came within one of the Knights at halftime. Arcadia's defense bunkered down in the second half and did not allow a Pacers' goal until 6:45 remaining.

Ashley Valway scored twice for the Pacers. Gwyneth Gleason led the team with a goal and two assists.

Defensively, Marywood received three caused turnovers and three ground balls from Michaela DiLorenzo. Molly Yelencsics totaled a season-best six ground balls.

Lauren Smith took the loss with nine saves and nine goals allowed.

Arcadia's Nicole Hutson marveled with five goals. Shannon Ryan matched her with five points on a goal and four assists.

Marywood struggled in two main components of the game. The Pacers went just 13 of 25 in clear attempts and controlled only three draws to the Knights' 13.

Arcadia outshot the Pacers by a 28-15 clip. Marywood took a 30-25 advantage in ground balls.

The Knights wasted no time by scoring two goals in the first 37 seconds of the game. Julia Imbert scored off of a free-position shot 13 seconds in, and Hutson and Ryan connected for the first of three times.

Marywood soon evened the score at two apiece. Erin Healy blazed downfield to halve the score at the 26:33 mark. Valway put one in at 19:46.

Merely 45 seconds later, Arcadia retook the lead. Marie Brockman won the draw, and Ryan fed Hutson another goal-scoring chance. It started a three-goal run that put the Pacers down 5-2 with 11:04 remaining in the half.

Gleason assisted Valway and then put one in herself with 5:57 to trim the deficit to 5-4 at halftime.

It took Marywood more than 23 minutes to solve the Arcadia defense until Sam Bussinelli tallied the only Forest Green and Gold goal in the second half to trim it to 7-5. Arcadia closed the game with a pair of goals.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Pacers who return to the field Monday to host Misericordia University at 4:00 pm.
