Albright Rallies to Top Pacers in Season Opener

Reading, Pa. - Host Albright College (1-2) rallied with three runs over the final two innings to top visiting Marywood University 5-4 in the Pacers' 2017 baseball opener.  Vince Rebar led Marywood with a homer and three RBI while Justin Haddix struck out three over the opening four innings.

The Pacers (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a two-run shot to left center from Rebar.  Rebar's shot scored Trevor Powers, who had reached after being hit by a pitch to open the game.  

In the third, Marywood expanded their lead to 3-0 on another RBI from Rebar.  James Goetz hit a two-out double to right center, and Rebar singled through the left side to bring Goetz home.  

The Lions would get one back in the bottom of the third when Jeff Yordy doubled in bring in a run.  Marywood went back up by three (4-1) in the fourth on the strength of an Anthony Navaro double to left center that scored Alan Nieto.

Albright made it a 5-2 ballgame with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and after a scoreless sixth got back to within a run in the seventh after Nathan Fretz earned an infield single and stole second.  Yordy came up big again for the hosts, bringing Fretz home on a single to center to make it a 4-3 ballgame.  

In the bottom of the eighth, Albright scored the game-winning run as Jimmie Gentry brough home two runs on a single to right field.

Goetz, Rebarand and Nieto accounted for two hits apiece and six of Marywood's seven hits on the day.  Navaro had the other.  On the mound, Haddix struck out three and allowed one run in four full innings of work.  Nathan Michener, Justin Perez, Billy McAuliffe and Salvatore Monello each pitched a full inning in relief.  McAuliffe struck out two while Monello took the loss.  

The Pacers and Lions will face each other again Monday, but this time in a doubleheader in Fort Pierce, Florida as the two teams travel south for spring break.
