Baseball Earns Key Split with Neumann

Aston, Pa. - Marywood University earned a thrilling extra inning win over Neumann University before falling to the Knights in the nightcap as the two teams split a CSAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Aston.  Marywood moves to 6-9 (3-2 CSAC) with the win while Neumann now stands at 7-9 (2-3).

Marywood used a five-run fifth in game one and then pulled off a double steal in the top of the eighth as Alan Nieto scored the winning run in Marywood's 9-8 win. Matt Staback keyed the five-run fifth for Marywood with a RBI double.  

Jake Schuster was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and Trevor Powers and Vince Rebar each had two hits as the Pacers outhit the Knights 13-12 in the opener.  James Goetz picked up two RBI as well for the Pacers. 

Powers improved to 1-1 on the year after throwing three innings of relief.  Starter Goetz struck out two and allowed seven hits over the opening four innings. Justin Perez picked up his first save of the year after shutting down the Knights in the bottom of the eighth. 

Playing as the away team in game two, Neumann built an early 8-0 lead through two and a half innings but had to hold off the Pacers for the 10-8 win.  Marywood used a four-run third and three-run sixth to get back in the game but could not complete the comeback.

Matthew Higgins was 3-for-4 for Marywood while Staback, Rebar and Anthony Navaro had two hits apiece.  Justin Haddix suffered the loss after allowing four runs and striking out three in 1.1 innings of work.  

Marywood will host Neumann in the regular season series finale tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
