Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University used two big innings, one of which included a grand slam from Chase Jones, to defeat visiting Clarks Summit 15-7 and snap a five-game losing skid, but the Defenders rallied for a 4-3 win in the nightcap as the two teams split non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

Marywood moves to 8-17 overall while Clarks Summit stands at 5-20.

In the 15-7 opening game win, Marywood plated five runs in both the first and fourth innings.  Matthew Higgins brought in two of those runs in the first with a single to left.  In the fourth, Jones cleared the bases with his first collegiate homer, doing so in style by hitting a grand slam over the centerfield fence.

Despite the score and out-hitting the Defenders 12-10, Jones' shot was the Pacers only extra base hit of the game.

Justin Perez started and got his first win of the season (1-3). Perez struck out the side in the first and finished with five total k's.  Mitch Clemons pitched the remaining four innings.

Vince Rebar, Matt Staback, Jones and Kevin McDonough all had two hits with Jones bringing in a career high six runs, falling one shy of the school record of seven set by two former Pacers.  Rebar and Higgins both had two RBI.

Connor Kopnick was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the opener for Clarks Summit.  Joe Chupick was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Clarks Summit scored a single run in the first, second, third and fifth innings to sneak out the 4-3 win. Domingo Rodrigues doubled to left center in the first to bring home a run and the Defenders went up 2-0 in the second on a Kopnick RBI single to left.

The visitors went up 3-0 in the top of the third thanks to a Robert Mitchell RBI single to left before Marywood put two on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single to left from Clemons.

Marywood tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a
Dylan Svetovich sacrifice flyout to right that scored Bill Chonka but the Defenders picked up the winning run in the top of the fifth as Nick Chupick scored during a throwing error.

Kegan Laman (2-4) got the complete-game win for the Defenders, striking out three and allowing two earned runs and just six Marywood hits.  Jeff Hupfer (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs over three innings of work.

Marywood University hosts Centenary University tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the beginning game of a three-game tilt with the Cyclones.
