Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 8-5 in game one but the Griffins rallied for a 8-7 win in the nightcap as the two teams split CSAC softball action Monday afternoon in Scranton.  Marywood moved to 4-11 (4-2 CSAC) with the split while GMU now stands at 7-9 (3-1).

Despite trailing 3-0 after one half inning of  play in the opener, Marywood rallied for the 8-5 win.  Marywood got one back in the bottom of the first and then took the lead with a four-run second.  In that inning, Lauryn Butler brough home a run with an RBI double and Kaitlyn Epler bunted in a run.  Alexa Scala would later bring Epler adn Butler home with a two-run single to right.

After building a 5-3 lead in the fourth, Marywood picked up two key insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth  as Kelsey Killeen doubled to left center and later scored on a throwing error.

Despite a two-run seventh from the Griffins, Marywood held on for the win.  Kirstie Alvarez struck out four and went the distance for her second win of the year.  Scala was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener. Epler also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBI.

In the nightcap, Gwynedd's Becki Christoffers made a great stop on a Mallory Porada shot through the left side with a runner on third and gunned her down at first (despite a sliding attempt from Porada) to end the nightcap. Despite a game that saw five combined errors, Christoffers' play to end the game highlighted several nice defensive efforts throughout, including a great play that saw Porada through out a runner at third directly from right field.

Marywood had an early 5-2 lead through two innings of play and extended that to 7-2 by the end of the fourth, but the visitors responded with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to claim the 8-7 win.  Lauren Waller sparked the three-run fifth for the Griffins with a leadoff homer to left.

Nikki Canfield went 4-for-4 with two RBI for Gwynedd and Jessica Behr added a pair of RBI as part of her 2-for-4 day.

Heather Schultz, Killeen and Brooke Labs had two hits apiece for Marywood with Scala and Killeen each driving in two.

Amanda Bridgwood suffered the loss in relief for Marywood after pitching one inning of relief and allowing three runs (two earned).  Alyssa Bavaro started and allowed four earned runs over the opening four innings.

Marywood is slated to be back in action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Wilkes. Game one gets underway at 6:00 pm at Kirby Park.
