Scala Powers Marywood to Sweep of Gators

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood picked up its second sweep of the season as the Pacers downed visiting Notre Dame of Maryland University in CSAC softball action Sunday afternoon to improve to 6-13 (6-2 CSAC).  The Gators fell to 3-12-1 (2-6 CSAC) after suffering a pair of five-inning losses.

Alexa Scala and Kirstie Alvarez both enjoyed two strong games, as the duo went a combined 9-for-10 with eight runs scored and eight RBI.  Scala picked up her 100th career hit with her third hit in game one.

Despite giving up a leadoff homer, Marywood University made quick work of Notre Dame in the opener, taking the game 10-1.  Isa Carunungan hit the Gators' first long ball of the year, sending a shot over the left field fence, to start the game.

Marywood responded with a five run first, then tackedon three in the second and one in both the third and fourth to put the game away early.  The Pacers' five-run first was highlighted by a two-run single to right from Scala, an RBI single to right from Alvarez and a RBI single from Malory Porada

Scala and Alvarez provided the Pacers' three runs in the second as Scala's single up the middle brought home Kaitlyn Epler and Alvarez doubled to center to score Brooke Labs and Scala.

Scala wound up 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored while Alvarez finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI.  Epler, Heather Schultz, and Porada also had two-hit games for the Pacers.

Alyssa Bavaro picked up her first win of the year (1-2) with a complete game effort on the mound, striking out four and allowing just one run on seven hits.

In game two, Marywood again enjoyed a four-run first, highlighted by a Sam Reid two-run double to left.  The Pacers added one in the third and three more in the fourth.

In the nightcap, Scala was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Alvarez was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. 

Alvarez (3-5) got the win on the mound, striking out a season high nine batters and allowing just one hit.

Marywood travels to nearby Clarks Summit University for a 3:00 pm CSAC doubleheader tomorrow.
