Baseball Splits Season Finale at Gwynedd Mercy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University's baseball team split their season finale at Gwynedd Mercy University Sunday.  Originally scheduled to be played in Scranton, the games got moved to GMU because of inclement weather and field conditions in NEPA.  Marywood won the opener 10-9 and fell in the nightcap, 8-2. 

Marywood closes their season at 14-22 (9-12 CSAC).  Gwynedd Mercy improved to and advances to the CSAC double elimination tournament where they will face top-seed Keystone College in Wednesday's opening game.

In the opener, Marywood rallied from a 9-4 deficit to top the Griffins 10-9 after scoring six runs over the final three innings.  Marywood was the home team in both games.

Marywood trailed 3-2 after two innings then took a 4-3 lead after a two-run fourth.  But the Griffins responded with six runs in the top of the fifth.  Marywood answered with four runs in the fifth then tied it up on a Mitch Clemons RBI double in the sixth before getting the winning run on a Matt Staback RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Vince Rebar, who tripled to open the inning.

Marywood out-hit the Griffins 16-12 in the opener.  Alan Nieto was 3-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored.  Kevin McDonough, Jake Schuster, Anthony Navaro, Clemons and Austin Takvor all had two hits with Schuster, Clemons and Takvor all picking up doubles.

Justin Perez (2-4) got the win on the mound after a complete-game effort.  Perez struck out one and allowed six earned runs.

Marywood's bats were held in check in the 8-2 nightcap loss to the Griffins.  The Pacers had runs in the first and sixth innings.  Justin Haddix (4-5) suffered the loss on the mound.  

Schuster (3-for-3) and Matthew Higgins (2-for-2) were the only Pacers with multiple hit games.  Schuster picked up another double in the nightcap.
