Volleyball Upsets No. 4 Wesley 3-1 in Atlantic East First Round

Dover, Del. –  The fifth-seeded Marywood University upset No. 4 Wesley College 3-1 Tuesday in the Atlantic East Conference first round. The Pacers win their first-ever Atlantic East playoff game to advance to face top-seeded Cabrini University on Thursday.

The Pacers win their first postseason playoff game since 2014.

Playing without one of their regular starters, the Pacers prevailed in four tightly contested games by scores of 28-26, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23.

Gabriella Santos had a double-double with 14 kills and 23 digs. Her defensive outing accounts for the most digs of her career. She had a .128 attack percentage.

Sara Burgos neared another school record with 48 assists. She also provided the Pacers with 10 digs.

Peri Sheerin matched Santos with a match-high 14 kills. Sheerin also factored in with three aces.

Playing in her first postseason match, Ashley King had the game of her career with 10 kills and a .600 attack percentage. She committed just one error on 15 attempts to tie for the second-best hitting performance in modern program history.

Jordan Vossler led the Pacers defensively with 31 digs. Brenna Kelley tallied 12 digs.

Mikayla Attwood provided four aces and four blocks.

In the first set, Marywood took a 5-1 lead on five straight points on Vossler serves. The Pacers had set point, but the Wolverines evened the score on a Reagan Healey kill and a Mary Getty-Elisa Hackendorn block. King's kill put the Pacers ahead 25-24 but a pair of Wesley kills forced them against the wall with set point. On Annie Heyen serves, Sheerin evened the score at 26-26 on a kill and gave the Pacers a 1-0 advantage with a kill for the 28-26 win.

Marywood led 19-16 in the second set before seven straight points on Caeli Clifford serves gave Wesley a 23-19 advantage. The Pacers fought back to force extra points at 24-24 on a Burgos kills. Nya Lightfoot and Jenna Burchfield evened the score at 1-1 on a kill and an ace, respectively.

Marywood scored 10 of 11 points to propel past the Wolverines in the third set. Falling behind 15-12, Kelley and Attwood each led five-point serves with a combined three aces and eight total attack points. Sheerin secured the 2-1 lead with a kill.

The Pacers managed to hold on in the fourth set despite a late Wesley rally. The Pacers led 23-17 before the Wolverines won six of seven points. A Getty-Lightfoot block closed the Pacers' match point down to 24-23. Sheerin finished the match point with a kill from Burgos.

Marywood plays at Cabrini on Thursday at 7 p.m.
