Women's Soccer Claims Inaugural Atlantic East Championshp

Scranton, Pa. - Host and four-seed Marywood University claimed the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Women's Soccer Championship as the Pacers held off #6 Immaculata 1-0 Saturday afternoon. Megan Swiecicki scored the game-winner off an assist from Tournament MVP Brooke Longstreet in the 57th minute.

Marywood (9-11) must now wait for an at-large Pool B selection as an independent to the NCAA Division III tournament as the Atlantic East conference does not have a automatic bid until their third year of existence.  That announcement will come Monday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half that saw Marywood hold a slight 8-7 advantage in shots (5-3 on goal), Marywood took advantage of a set piece with the wind at their backs 12 minutes into the second half.  Much like Wednesday's semifinal win over Wesley, Longstreet played a dangerous ball at goal. This time, however, her lofted ball from 30 yards out was tipped by Mighty Mac keeper Brooke Shissler into the crossbar.  With the rebound falling to the goal line and Shissler falling into the net, Swiecicki put it home uncontested to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

From there, Longstreet and Marywood's defense, anchored by Aly Moyer, did the rest.  Moyer made a spectacular tip save over the crossbar on a long effort from Carly Quigly in the 78th minute, then the Pacers defense turned away Immaculata's ensuing corner kick attempt.  Quigly had scored similar goals all year, including one such in the Mighty Macs' semifinal win over top-seed Cabrini Wednesday night.

For the game, Marywood had 10 shots on goal to Immaculata's seven, while the Mighty Macs had a 18-16 edge in total shots.  Moyer made saves to complete her second straight shutout win.  Shissler made nine saves for Immaculata, who closed their year with a 6-11-2 overall mark and Runner-Up trophy.  Both teams had four corners.

This is Marywood's second conference title in three years and third overall as the Pacers won Conference Championshps with the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) in 2008 and 2016.
