Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hessling Ties Rebounding Record as Late Comeback Falls Short

Middletown, Conn. – Senior forward Natasha Hessling tied the Marywood University women's basketball program record for rebounds in a game in a 63-57 loss to Wesleyan University. Hessling matched the record with 20 rebounds in Saturday's loss.

Hessling produced her fourth third double-double of the season. She finished with 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field. Hessling corralled seven offensive and 13 defensive boards.

She tied the record previously set by Carly Leitzel '14 against Wilkes University in 2011. With her 19 rebounds in a Nov. 17 win over King's College, Hessling has two of the top three boarding games in the record books.

Emily Theobald and Morgan Shamro each joined Hessling in double figures with 12 points. Shamro came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers.

Marywood (2-5) came back from a 13-point deficit with six minutes remaining in the game to force a two-possession game. The Pacers went on a 9-1 run to come within four points in the last 35 seconds. Cait Reilly kicked things off with a 3-poitnter and a free throw. Marissa Fernandez Tierney made a jumper in the paint with 1:57 left to trim the Cardinals' lead to 60-53. Following a Tara Berger free throw, Shamro connected on a long-range shot with 50 seconds on a pass from Fernandez Tierney.

Fernandez Tierney possessed a defensive rebound on the latter of two missed Wesleyan free throws. Shamro made a free throw to move within four points with 35 seconds left. The Pacers were unable to capitalize on the Cardinals' free throw shooting woes with two missed 3-pointers and two missed free throws to end the game.

Wesleyan (3-1) took advantage of 16 Marywood turnovers by outscoring the Pacers 19-8 off of giveaways. Thanks in part to Hessling's defensive prowess, the Pacers outrebounded the Cardinals 52-46.

Marywood shot 34.8 percent from the field to the Cardinals' 38.2 percent. Both teams struggled from the charity stripe. Wesleyan made just six free throws at a 35.3 percent clip. Marywood went 4 of 14 from the lien for 28.6 percent.

In the first half, a layup by Emily Theobald cut the deficit to four with 4:54 on the clock but the Cardinals outscored Marywood 8-2 down the stretch to take a 10-point lead entering the second quarter. Ava Tompkins hit one from behind-the-arc at the 6:02 mark of the second to give Wesleyan a 14-point lead, its largest of the game. The Pacers got within eight following a layup from Theobald, but Wesleyan used a 6-2 run to close out the half as a free throw by Katy O'Connor with :01 remaining put the home team ahead 34-22.

Wesleyan was led by Olivia Gorman's 17 points. Berger had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Pacers will travel to Susquehanna University on Saturday, Dec. 8.
