Marywood Scores 21 Straight First Half Points to Knock Out Aggies

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University scored 21 consecutive points in the first half in a 59-54 victory over Delaware Valley University Monday in non-conference women's basketball action. The Pacers broke away from a tied game by holding the Aggies to without a field goal for the final five minutes.

Marywood (4-5) outscored the Delaware Valley 8-3 in the last five minutes.

Senior forward Natasha Hessling recorded her career-high sixth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds and 12 points. Aryah Aungst led the Pacers in scoring with 17 points and just missed her own double-double with nine rebounds.

Emily Theobald also factored in with 12 points. Marissa Fernandez Tierney made several big plays down the stretch with career bests of seven points and six rebounds.

The Aggies (4-4) rushed out to a 13-4 lead with a 11-point run in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Leading by nine with 1:45 left in the first quarter, Delaware Valley did not score again until a Lauren Moretti 3-pointer with 29 seconds to go in the first half – a span of 11:16 without any points. Delaware Valley shot 7.7 percent in the second quarter.

The Aggies' Danielle Skedzielewski erased a 13-point deficit by tying the game at 51-51 with a layup with 5:03 left for her team's final field goal. On the next Pacers' possession, Olson regained the lead on a layup from a backdoor Hessling pass.

The senior duo traded roles on the Pacers' next offensive end. Del Val cut it to a one possession game on a pair of Smink free throws with three minutes left. With 90 seconds left, Olson dished off the ball to the paint for Hessling to sink a jumper for a 57-53 lead.

Smink brought it back to a one-possession game with a free throw made with 36 seconds remaining. Olson was seemingly stuck in no-woman's land on the baseline when she made a turnaround move on a defender to free up a lane for a layup. Hessling crashed the boards and snagged the ball for a key offensive rebound with 16 seconds on the scoreboard.

Fernandez Tierney sunk a free throw to extend the Pacers' lead to 58-54. The Aggies' last chance 3-pointer was blocked by Olson and recovered by Fernandez Tierney.

Delaware Valley was led by Smink's 25 points and six 3-pointers. Skedzielewski had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Emily Theobald put the pacers up by eight with a layup to start the third quarter before the Aggies made another charge. They went on an 8-0 run as Smink hit her sixth trey of the game, Moretti hit her third, and Moser's strip and score made it 49-49 with seven minutes left in regulation.

The scrappy Pacers' defense out-rebounded their counterparts 43-41. Marywood shot 39 percent for the game, and the Aggies went 31.7 percent from the field. Del Val shot better from beyond the arc, hitting 10 of 26 3-point attempts for a 38.5 percentage. Marywood doubled the Aggies 28-14 in the paint.

Marywood continues its three-game home stand when it welcomes Elizabethtown College on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
