Softball Knocks Off Iowa Wesleyan, 8-5

Titusville, Fla. - Kirstie Alvarez pitched another complete-game and struck out four as Marywood held off Iowa Wesleyan 8-5 Thursday afternoon in spring break softball action. Marywood improved to 3-2 on the year with the win while the Tigers fell to 1-7.

Marywood jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the opening two innings thanks to a pair of runs in each inning. In the first, Heather Schultz would score on a passed ball and Alvarez singled to left to bring home Alexa Scala.  In the second, Kaitlyn Epler singled in a run and would later score on a wild pitch.

Iowa Wesleyan responded with a three-run third and would take a 5-4 lead with a two-run fourth, but Marywood tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom half of the fourth.  Scala would start things off with a two-out double to center, and Alvarez singled to bring her home and tie the game up.

The Pacers then put the winning run across in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on two more insurance runs.  Annie Heyen hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Sarah Witte, who walked to open the inning and moved up two bases on a groundout from Mackie Goodwin.  Leading 6-5, Jackie Burke scored on a error and Epler would come home later as the Tigers caught a runner stealing.

Alvarez (2-1) struck out four and allowed three earned runs in the win.  She was also 2-for-4 with two RBI to help her own cause.  Scala was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Epler also went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Marywood returns to action at 2:00 pm to take on NAIA member Missouri Baptist. The Pacers fell to the Spartans in five innings Tuesday and will also play them in a doubleheader Friday to close out their spring break trip.
