Highlanders Hold Off Pacers, 7-6

Langhorne, Pa. – Host Cairn University held off a late rally attempt from Marywood University and defeated the Pacers 7-6 in Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Langhorne.

Cairn improved to 2-1 in the conference (13-7 overall) while Marywood had a five game win streak snapped and fell to 10-8 (0-1 CSAC).

Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the first off a double down the left field line from Scott Becker that scored Michael TempelMitch Clemons then singled through the left side to bring home Jake Schuster and Schuster would later bring home two runs with a double of his own as the Pacers batted around in the opening frame.

A single in the bottom half of the first got the hosts on the board, and they cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second on a RBI groundout.  In the third, a RBI double and runner scoring on a wild pitch tied the game up at 4-4.

Marywood went up 5-4 in the fourth on a RBI single from John Mandarano, but Cairn scored the next three runs of the game in the sixth and seventh to take a 7-5 lead.

Trailing 5-4, Cairn got an RBI double and a solo homer to take a 6-5 lead, then used a sac fly to score their seventh run of the game.

Down by two, Marywood looked to complete their second ninth inning rally in as many days.  Kevin McDonough picked up a one-out single to short and advanced to third when Schuster singled to right center.  After Schuster moved to second on a stolen base, Cairn got a big strikeout for the second out of the inning.

Mitch Clemons then singled to third to bring in McDonough and move Schuster to third, making it a 7-6 ballgame.  With runners on the corners and two outs, Cairn got an infield pop-out to end the threat and the game, holding on for the one-run win.

Schuster finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two RBI.  Clemons also picked up two RBI as part of his 3-for-5 day.

Joey Castellani (1-4) struck out four over six innings of work.  Billy McAuliffe allowed one run on two hits in one inning of relief work while Pasquale Mandonato kept a clean sheet with a scoreless and hitless eighth inning, striking out one.

The Pacers and Highlanders will complete their regular season two-game series Thursday in Scranton. Game time is 3:00 pm.
