Men's Lacrosse Slips to Gwynedd Mercy in CSAC Showdown

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University was held scoreless for a half hour as rival Gwynedd Mercy University held off the Pacers 7-5 on Saturday in a Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse rivalry game. The Pacers dropped their first conference tilt of the season.

Marywood had a late chance to come back from a three-goal deficit. The Pacers scored three in five minutes to come within one goal of the Griffins. Ryan Simpson added a goal on an assist from brother Joe Simpson to give Gwynedd Mercy extra cushion with 3:31 remaining in the contest.

Rob Maini scored a pair of goals. He is now within three of reaching the 100 Goal Club for his career.

Zach Vaughan finished with a goal and five ground balls. Kyle Butera tallied four ground balls. Vinny Biancardi made 15 saves.

Ryan Simpson garnered a hat trick for the Griffins. Kohler Setler had a goal and an assist.

Marywood needed just 2:21 seconds to get onto the scoreboard when Maini had his first goal of the game. Ryan Simpson's man-up goal from Setley squared the contest at 1-1 after the first period.

Setley gave the Griffins a goal in the early moments of the second period, and Vaughan posted a score from Zach Beja to even the score.

Gwynedd Mercy had three straight goals during the Pacers' drought, extending its lead to 5-2. Jeff Johnsen breathed some life into Marywood with an unassisted tally with 11:19 remaining in the game.

After Derek Alcavage responded for the Griffins, Maini added his second on a masterful play. He caused a turnover by intercepting a Gwynedd Mercy shot on a fast break chance. Maini turned around and took a shot to goal just before being hit by a Griffin defender with 7:15.

The penalty on Maini's shot allowed for a man-up chance that benefited the Pacers. Luke Shedler found the net on an Austin Maylor pass to trim the deficit to 6-5 with 6:28 left.

Gwynedd Mercy won the faceoff and benefited from ground balls pickups by Setley and Joe Simpson before the Simpson-Simpson connection for the game's final goal. Marywood had one chance in the late stages but a turnover ultimately doomed its chances for a comeback performance.

The Griffins outshot the Pacers 35-25 and 22-17 on target.

Marywood hosts nationally ranked Cabrini University on Saturday during its Senior Day.
