Softball Sweeps Cairn to Remain in Playoff Hunt

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University swept Cairn University by scores of 9-1 (five innings) and 9-3 as the Pacers remained in the thick of the CSAC softball playoff hunt.  The Pacers leveled their overall mark at 16-16 on the year and improve to 11-7 in the league, while the Highlanders fell to 14-16 (6-10) with the losses.

Kirstie Alvarez struck out seven and allowed just two hits for her 11th win of the campaign (11-6).  Alvarez was not charged with an earned run in the 9-1 opening game victory as the Highlanders' runner originally reached on a error.

Annie Heyen (2-for-3) had a pair of doubles and three RBI while Alvarez also went 2-for-3 at the plate.  Hailey Rapisardi (2-for-2) had a double and RBI.  Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the first and scored four times in the second and third innings to go up 9-0.  Despite giving up the unearned run in the top of the fifth, Alvarez finished off the visitors to get a complete-game, five-inning win.

In the nightcap, Kaite Siano (3-4) went the distance, allowing two earned runs and striking out two in seven full innings of work.

Heyen finished the nightcap 2-for-4 with another double.  Kelsey Killeen (3-for-4) also had a double, while Hannah Docalovich was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.

Marywood will host Centenary Friday. Game one begins at 3:00 pm.
