Women's Lacrosse Gets First Ever Win over Susquehanna

Selinsgrove, Pa. - Marywood University earned its first win over Susquehanna University in program history in a 13-8 decision Wednesday night in non-conference women's lacrosse action. The Pacers had previously dropped five straight decisions to the River Hawks. 

Sam Bussinelli broke the single-season assists record with her 31st of the season. Bussinelli finished with two goals and two assists for her 79th points of the year. 

Caitlin Watson had a game-high five-point effort against the River Hawks (4-8). Watson scored three goals and two assists. 

Gwyneth Gleason matched Bussinelli with two goals and two assists. She provided the Pacers (10-6) with nine draw controls. 

Zoe Simeone scored twice. Gina Babcock provided a pair of assists. 

Defensively, Molly Yelencsics totaled three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Katrina Kelly and Kelly Ciabattone caused a pair of turnovers. In goal, Mary Leahy made eight saves. 

Marywood opened the game with a vengeance by scoring the first five goals of the game in the first five minutes. Kelly started the barrage with an unassisted tally at 25:16. Bussinelli capped the run on a feed from Watson with 20:35 left in the first half. 

Susquehanna held the Pacers without a goal for the next 17 minutes, adding three straight of its own. Stephanie Dowling trimmed the deficit to 5-3 with 4:50. Marywood was aided by a pair of River Hawks' goals that were called back due to stick infractions. 

Marywood finished the half with three consecutive goals in the final 3:15. Healy put the Pacers back on track with an unassisted goal. Kylie Winton stretched the lead to four, and Faith Grieshaber found the net 23 seconds before the final horn to go into the break with an 8-3 lead. 

Susquehanna scored four of the first five goals of the second half. Klair Brooke had a woman-down goal from Katherine DeMaio to put the River Hawks within two (9-7) with 13:41. Twenty-five seconds later, Gleason tallied a woman-up goal from Bussinelli. Marywood held Susquehanna scoreless the rest of the way with cushion scores from Bussinelli and Simeone. 

Marywood outshot the River Hawks by a 32-22 margin. Susquehanna held a 22-17 advantage in ground balls, while Marywood had success on draw controls by a 16-6 margin. 

The Pacers head to the CSAC playoffs as the No. 2 seed. They will await their opponent with a first-round bye and will host the lowest remaining seed on Wednesday, May 2.
