Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Lead Slips from Women's Soccer in 3-2 Loss to Wilkes

Edwardsville, Pa. - An early two-goal lead slipped away from Marywood University as Wilkes University scored three unanswered goals in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Pacers Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.  The Colonels (1-1) got the game-winner from Nicolette Towlen with just 4:50 left in the game.

Marywood (0-3) took the lead 14:16 into the first half.  After a Wilkes foul 35 yards out on the left flank, defender Madison Daches found center-back Molly Sobolewski wide open in the middle of the field off the set play. Sobolewski one-timed a shot from 30 out and found the upper right 90 of the net for the early Pacers' lead.

Just under four minutes later, Marywood doubled their lead.  Jackie VonItter took a corner from the left flank and her right-footed in-swinger curled in at the back post for an unassisted goal at the 18:15 mark.

But Wilkes responded quickly, scoring just 19 seconds after kickoff.  Towlen would dribble through the Pacers' defense inside the 18 yard box and slot Aly Moyer to cut the host's deficit in half at 18:34.

Later in the first half, the Colonels tied the game up. In the 39th minute, Emily Bidelspach scored unassisted on a breakaway.

Tied 2-2 in the second half, Wilkes limited Marywood's offensive opportunities, out-shooting them 11-2 in the second stanza, and nearly took the lead several times.  Several nice saves from Moyer and a lucky Marywood bounce off the post kept the game tied until the final moments of the half.

That's when Towlen got through again for her second tally of the game, lofting a shot over Moyer from 20 yards out on the right side for the game-winner at 86:10.

Wilkes out-shot Marywood 18-6 for the game and placed nine of those strikes on frame.  Moyer made six saves in the loss, while her counterpart Courtney Stanley got the win for Wilkes despite not making a save.

Marywood hosts The University of Scranton (3-0) on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
