Field Hockey Tops Gwynedd Mercy for First Time Since 2008

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University blanked Gwynedd Mercy University 1-0 Saturday for its ninth consecutive field hockey victory. The Pacers defeated the Griffins for the first time since 2008, putting a stop to an 11-game streak.

Kenzie Drew scored the lone goal of the game in the 35th minute. Off of a penalty corner, Drew seized on a loose ball right in front of the goal line and found the back of the cage for her third of the season.

Marywood edged Gwynedd Mercy 4-3 in shots and had a 4-1 advantage in shots on target. The Pacers doubled the Griffins 8-4 in penalty corners.

With the win over qualifiers of the past two NCAA tournaments, the Pacers place themselves in the driver's position with two Atlantic East Conference games remaining. Marywood (11-3, 3-0) hold a one-game lead over Wesley College for first place and clinch the No. 1 seed with a win over Cabrini University next Saturday.

Gwyneth Gleason made a crucial defensive play in the second quarter. Gleason stopped a dangerous 2 v. 1 chance with the score knotted at zero.

Kerri Mountz made a save on the Griffins' only shot on goal for the game, preserving her first Atlantic East clean sheet. The Griffins' Abi Kennedy made three saves.

The nine-game winning streak is currently three more than the program's previous record.
