Field Hockey Season Ends in NCAA First Round

Pacers drop 1-0 heartbreaker to FDU-Florham

Madison, N.J. - Marywood University's field hockey put on an impressive performance in their first ever NCAA tournament match but the Pacers fell to FDU-Florham in heartbreaking fashion, 1-0 in Wednesday's first round action.

The Devils (17-4) advance to take on Salisbury University in Maryland in Saturday's second round.  The Pacers close their outstanding season at 16-4.

Marywood out-shot the host Devils 2-1 in the opening period of play.  Things would flip in the second as the hosts had a 7-0 advantage in shots, but Kerri Mountz had five first half saves to keep the Devils off the scoreboard.

FDU would out-shoot Marywood 9-0 in the third, but again were held scoreless by Mountz and the Pacers' defense.

Finally, the Devils broke through in the fourth.  With 8:04 remaining, Haleigh Flukey tipped in a pass from Maggie Sohns for the game-winner. It was Flukey's 25th goal of the season.

Mountz finished the game with 12 saves, nearly matching her season high 14 (vs. Kean).  Marisa Mongioi had three defensive saves for Marywood, and Sara Sterchak added one.  Jenna Dickey, Angela Sanchez and Gwyneth Gleason accounted for Marywood's shots on goal.

Sydney Moskal had a defensive save for the Devils to keep Marywood from finding the tying goal late in the fourth after a penalty corner. Goaltender Megan March made two other saves for the shutout win.

Marywood closes their season with the most wins in program history (16), the program's first conference title since 1998 and the team's first ever trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.
