Second Half Surge Propels Christopher Newport Past Marywood

Lancaster, Pa. - Leading by just five in the first half, Christopher Newport University pulled away from Marywood University's men's basketball team with a dominating second half en route to a 87-65 win over the Pacers.  The Captains improved to 2-1 while Marywood fell to 0-3.

CNU would expand their lead to nine (35-26) at the break, and outscore Marywood 52-30 in the second half.  

A Jack DeGroot jumper got the Pacers to within three (38-35) early in the second half, but the Captains went on a 18-3 run over the next five minutes to pull away.

DeGroot led all scorers with 20 on the night, while Adam Boussatta had 15.  CNU had three players in double digits, led by Jason Ainger's team-high 15.

The Captains outscored Marywood 44-20 in the paint, and limited Marywood to 35.5% shooting on the night, including an 18.2% clip (2 of 11) from beyond the arc. CNU shot 45.5% and hit eight threes in the win.

CNU also scored 25 points off 20 Marywood turnovers in the win, and their bench outscored Marywood's 45-21.

Marywood will play in the F&M Rotary Tip-Off Tournament consolation game tomorrow at 5:30 pm against either Lancaster Bible College or the host, Franklin & Marshall College.
