Cavaliers Knock Off Top-Seeded Pacers To Win Women's Soccer Championship

Scranton, Pa. - The Atlantic East Conference Women's Soccer Championship saw 26 total shots, but two found the back of the net in favor of third-seeded Cabrini University, as the Cavaliers defeated top-seeded Marywood University, 2-0, to take home the title on Saturday evening.

The Cavaliers (15-3-2) got on the board early in the game, cashing in on a corner kick in the 13th minute. Cabrini's Marissa Portelli sent a ball to the right side of the goal where it met the foot of Rebekah Cunningham, who redirected the cross into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

No more scoring happened for the remainder of the half, as Cabrini carried a 1-0 lead into the break.  Marywood threatened early in the second half, as Molly Sobolewski's effort off a Marywood corner kick in the opening minutes of the stanza rang off the crossbar.

In the 56th minute, Brianna Blair carried the ball down the right sideline and sent a perfect cross to teammate Diana VanSickle, finishing the connection with a goal and the 2-0 final.

The Pacers (9-7) had a lot of opportunities in the second half, outshooting the Cavs, 12-3, but the four that went on target were all turned away by Cabrini goalkeeper Ashley Tutzauer, who recorded the shutout victory in net. Elizabeth Levine's shot in the 85th minute was cleared off the line by a Cavalier defender, preserving the shutout.

Bella DiToma made two saves for Marywood in the loss. The Pacers held slim advantages in shots (14-12) and shots on goal (5-4) while Cabrini had a 8-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.

With the assist on the second goal and helping a backline keep a clean sheet, Blair was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

Cabrini will await word on a possible Pool B berth to the NCAA Division III tournament or an ECAC berth, while Marywood will also await word on a possible ECAC berth. Both fields will be announced Monday afternoon.
