Pacers Hold Off E-Town for Mastroianni's 100th Win

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University rallied from a first half deficit to provide Head Coach Enrico Mastroianni with his 100th career victory Saturday afternoon as the Pacers knocked off Elizabethtown College 87-80 in non-conference men's basketball action at the Insalaco Arena.

Marywood trailed by as much as nine in the first half and didn't take their first lead until a Zach Tinkham three put them ahead with 2:44 to go in the opening half.  The Pacers held a one point 41-40 lead at the break, opened the second half on a 10-4 run and never relinquished the lead.

Jack DeGroot had a game-high 24 points, Jake Curnow (19) and Jason Holman (13) each had career highs and Tinkham finished with 16 for the Pacers, who improved to 5-6 with the win.  Bryce Greene had a team-high 21 for the Blue Jays, who dropped to 3-4 with the loss.  They also had three others in double figures.

After trailing for much of the first half, including by nine seven minutes in and by eight with six to play, Marywood caught fire after a Donovan Catchings' three cut the visitor's lead to five.  They would eventually take the lead after Curnow kicked the ball to an open Tinkham in the corner for a three, and back-to-back jumpers from DeGroot kept the Pacers up by one at the break.

Both Curnow (13) and DeGroot (11) reached double figures after the first 20 minutes, as did E-Town's Bryce Greene, who had 11 in the first half as well. Both teams were hot from the floor, each connecting on 50% of their opening half shots from the floor, including a 46.2% (6 of 13) clip from the Blue Jays and a 45.5% clip (5 of 11) for the Pacers from three point range. With only four opening half fouls called, only the visitors when to the line for just three freebies, where they went 2-of-3.

A quick 5-0 burst from Marywood to open the second half gave the Pacers a bit of breathing room, and they kept E-Town at bay much of the way.  Despite getting to within three once after a Greene jumper made it 56-53 in favor of Marywood with 11:26 to go, the Pacers pushed their to 10 (67-57) with a 11-4 run over the next four minutes.

After keeping their lead around 10 until six minutes remaining, Marywood saw the visitors make one final push,.  The Blue Jays got back to within three (73-70) on a layup by Connor Moffatt, but a three from Tinkham and pair of free throws from DeGroot pushed the hosts' lead back to nine (79-70) with 1:36 to go.

Including DeGroot's freebies with 1:36 left, Marywood went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.

Marywood is off until after Christmas and will travel to Newburgh, New York to take on Mount Saint Mary College on December 30.
